The museum's construction was scheduled to start in 2007, but problems with the foundation delayed the start until 2008. When completed, due to its structure and the ecological materials used to built it, the museum would have been the most expensive Guggenheim constructed so far.[citation needed]

In October 2009, the project was cancelled. The Guggenheim foundation stated that it wanted to complete the museum being built in Abu Dhabi, and concentrate on the museums already in operation.
